After
creating the first set of character designs and enjoying the line art process, I set about making the next sheet for the deckhand crew of the F/V Scully.

This sheet, of three deckhand members, completes the crew of six (see here for previous post). Here we have the Engineer (Left), Deckhand #1 (Middle) and Deckhand #2 (Right). In each character, I hope to convey their roles; while describing what sort of personality they have. For example, Deckhand #1 is wearing oversized baggy clothing, a headband and sporting a big grin. Hopefully, this translates to the viewer, the character to be somewhat laid back but a pleasant chap; or somewhere along those lines.

Above is the chief engineer of the Scully. An engineer on-board a fishing vessel would be responsible for keeping everything running and have a wide knowledge of how everything works. If something goes wrong hundreds of miles out at sea, you can't call the nearby services! Note...he has a distinctive 70's walrus moustache.

This is Deckhand #1. To the right of every character I have pulled up their colour palettes. This is another factor to come into effect; and how clothing colour can evoke different moods of the individuals.

Here we have Deckhand #2. A deckhand on a crab fishing vessel deals with the handling of the catch, as well as cleans, prepares and maintains equipment. A deckhand's shift can be anywhere from five to sixteen hours (plus) and the work is brutally demanding. One wrong move and you could end up overboard in -40°C!
I had a lot of fun working on these early draft character sheets and hope to work on several more in the future; developing personalities and adding details like short profiles for each!
Thanks for reading :)
